Today, the works ministry announced that it would provide Covid-19 vaccines for 40,000 workers in the construction sector at a subsidised cost of RM90 per worker.

Works minister Fadillah Yusof announced that the vaccination programme would be launched in Kuala Lumpur on June 30 and Selangor on July 14. The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) will be coordinating the programme.

CIDB's programme is approved by the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF). The programme will see the construction industry fund and provide a task force, certified medical offers and vaccination centres (PPVs).

Subsidised vaccination

According to Fadillah, there is an RM140 vaccination charge per person for two complete vaccine doses. CIDB will provide an RM50 subsidy for each worker and also offer their premises as PPVs free of charge.

In a statement, the minister said employers in the construction sector would only need to pay RM90 for each employee to be vaccinated.

He added that participation in the vaccination programme is voluntary. Construction industry players can select their vaccination programme for their workers by consulting directly with CITF.

Vaccines are free, but private sector will bear other costs

When asked for clarification about the programme's cost, a CIDB official explained that under the economic frontliner programme, the government still provides the vaccines for free. However, the private sector will bear the other costs such as logistics, venue and management.

He said that CIDB had included everything in the RM90 charge for its vaccination programme, covering administration, management, qualified medical personnel, and other costs.
