Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is one of the most sacred months. From dusk till dawn, we observe a strict fast for the entire month. This could take a toll on our productivity at the workplace.

But, there are some things we can do to stay productive and maintain a healthy work-life balance during Ramadan. Here are a few tips you can follow to make Ramadan a lot more productive:

1. Eat adequate sahur meal

We get it, we need to refuel our energy during sahur and the breaking fast. But we need to resist the temptation to overeat. Control your eating habit by reserving a moderate portion for sahur.

Why not overeat? After all, we'll be facing a long day ahead, yes?

The truth is overeating will lead to you feeling drowsy and unenergized. You'll be spending most of the time at work just yawning.

Choose balanced menus – carbohydrate, protein, and fibre in your intake. Foods that contain fibre help keep you full longer. Also, don't forget to eat more vegetables and fruits.

2. Do not skip Sahur

Sahur is the most essential meal of the day during Ramadan. You cannot afford to miss it. Otherwise, it will be extremely hard to manage your day. Wake up early so you can have more time for sahur and pray before the dawn finally breaks.

3. Adjust your sleeping hours

You will need to manage these two sleeping schedules:

  • Night schedule. If sleeping late is your habit, you will need to change it. If you can, try to sleep early as you will also need to wake up earlier than in months other than Ramadan.
  • After sahur schedule: Try not to sleep after sahur / morning prayer, because you might end up feeling sluggish afterwards. Try to energise yourself with light exercise or other activities. If you need to be in the office early in the morning (7 AM to  9 AM), you may leave early.

4. Do not drink caffeine

We love our coffee and tea, but unfortunately, these drinks do contain caffeine. The problem with caffeine is that it has a diuretic effect that increases urine production, thus flushing out salt and water from our body.

If we drink too much caffeine, it will result in increased thirst and you don't need that during Ramadan. In order to stay hydrated throughout the day, let's go back to basics with the good old water.

Make sure you have a glass of purified water along with sweet fruit such as dates to help you break your fast.

5. Plan your workdays ahead

It can be tough trying to focus on work during Ramadan as hunger, fatigue, and thirst kick in and cause distractions. We recommend you to plan your workdays ahead so you will be able to focus your time and energy on work and finish it without any delay.

This will help you maintain a healthy work-life balance during Ramadan.

6. Take a break during afternoons

As the day progresses, hunger and tiredness may take a toll on your productivity. Which is why you should take a quick five-minute break after every hour. Try taking a short walk to the washroom and wash your face a few times. This will help you feel fresh and relaxed for a while.

Last but not least; be consistent in your efforts to make the most of your workdays while fasting during Ramadan.

We truly hope that these tips will help you maintain your productivity during the holy month of Ramadan.
