Ramadan is upon us, which means three things for companies in Malaysia: 

  • Shorter working hours
  • Decreased energy and productivity at the workplace
  • Large portion of the population taking annual leave

With this in mind, we discover the many ways to enhance efficiency in the limited that businesses have to operate, as well as making full use of the holy month with regard to marketing activities. 

How do we assure that our businesses not only survive, but grow in this holy month?

 

1. Consider the do's and don'ts

Remember that there are certain rules when it comes to Ranadab. Marketers would need to conform accordingly with respect to content and time of marketing activities. Avoid from showing pictures of food during fasting hours, or commercials with models in improper clothing.

 

2. Look at the bright side

Acknowledging the factors mentioned above, there is heightened stress on the employees, who are usually more determined to work harder to counterbalance for the shorter working hours, just so they'll be able to leave on time. Keep your team on track with clear tasks and timeframes, and make sure they are using their shorter workdays as efficiently as possible.

 

3. Make full use of the holy month

Ramadan is a big chance for marketers to generate business, much like Christmas and Thanksgiving may be for Western cultures. There are many ways in which businesses can attract more customers, but be careful and consider the sensitivity of Muslims.

 

4. Focus on family values

Another underlying value that is very strongly encouraged during the holy month is that of brotherhood, compassion, and unity.

Create content that is based on these values in order to target customers effectively. People are in the spirit of giving so everything becomes more family and community-related, which in turn is a great opportunity for marketing products.

Try aiming for family-friendly channels to reach your core audience and use this month as a chance to express your consideration for your client’s family values.  

 

5. Take the time to reflect

If you see a drop in business during this season, it is vital that you do not waste the extra time that you have. Even though this may not be the best time to spend the additional funding on marketing, this could be a great chance to:

  • Retrain your employees,

  • Build corporate community and culture,

  • Reflect on current practices to identify opportunities for improvement, and

  • Build up digital assets such as imagery, video content, website design and user experience.
