If you’re planning to hire digital experts, you should start looking in Sarawak and Kedah.

The professional networking site LinkedIn identified these states as “hidden gem” locations of tech talents. In its 2019 Emerging Jobs in Malaysia Report, Sarawak and Kedah are two states in Malaysia where the supply of tech talents actually exceeded demand.

Apparently, LinkedIn analysed millions of job titles listed by users in Malaysia to find out the top emerging jobs for the country. These were:

All of these jobs were related to technology, but most of them required soft skills such as management and communication. LinkedIn said this makes them “hybrid” roles which spans both new and traditional job scopes.

LinkedIn’s vice president of talent and learning solutions for APAC, Feon Ang, said that hybrid jobs were “emerging more rapidly than at any other time in history, with many of them created just five years ago.”

LinkedIn explained that the reason for the increasing demand for tech talent in Malaysia was mainly due to e-commerce, which Malaysia has been a “particularly early adopter” of”. This results in many companies looking for tech talent to help take their businesses online.

Even companies in traditional sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing are using technology to track data for quality control purposes.

But, the supply of tech talent in Malaysia is “comparatively low” which is pretty much the same in many places worldwide.

Researchers found that Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Selangor as the three states with the highest supply of digital talent in Malaysia. However, they also added that organisations should also look for talents in states such as Sarawak and Kedah.

LinkedIn said that by 2021, digital transformation was expected to add RM41 billion to Malaysia’s economy, with digital products and services making up nearly half of the country’s income.

LinkedIn also included some final thoughts for HR and Talent Acquisition teams:

1. Hire for skills, not just job titles

Look beyond job titles and focus on the skills needed for the role. Hiring for the future state of the business means hiring for potential to learn, grow and adapt in a world of digital transformation.

2. Review your hiring strategy and invest in your employer brand

The market is highly competitive, and Talent Acquisition teams must continually review their hiring strategy and adopt a digital approach to find talent.

3. Leverage on the power of data and insights

Use data to make well-informed decisions that can anticipate what talent might be needed, rather than rushing to catch up.

4. Invest in upskilling your employees

When talent is limited, the ‘perfect candidate’ will be very selective and expensive.
