LinkedIn recently published a report on Malaysia’s top five emerging jobs. All of them were related to the tech industry.

In its 2019 Emerging Jobs in Malaysia Report, LinkedIn researched job titles listed by its users in Malaysia in 2013 and 2017. It then grouped them into common job roles and calculated how frequently a particular job role appeared in 2013 versus 2017.

The five jobs that saw the largest growth in frequency over the years were identified as the country’s top emerging jobs.

Here are the top five future jobs in Malaysia:

 

1. Data Scientist

The government’s investment and collaboration with local universities to develop talent was “driving the report’s top emerging job,” according to LinkedIn.

Data scientists are responsible in analysing and interpreting data, usually collected by businesses.

Malaysia is expecting to double the number of data professionals to 20,000 by 2020. More local universities are introducing data analytics into the curriculum of non-tech subjects such as education and accounting.

If you are looking attract this kind of talent, LinkedIn recommended that companies should promote benefits such as good work-life balance, high compensation and flexible work arrangements so you can stand out in the crowded talent market.

 

2. Full Stack Engineer

Tech companies used to be the primary sector that hires full stack engineers. Now, they are in high demand among companies that want to go digital, as well as startups. Linked said that Malaysia has “one of the highest start-up densities in the region.”

Full stack engineers help a business go digital from the beginning to the end, including creating apps and websites. This job requires technical skills such as website server hosting and UX design, as well as soft skills such as project management and communication.

 

3. Drive Test Engineer

Drive test engineers use the data gathered from telco networks to troubleshoot issues and improve network coverage.

This job is especially in demand because of Malaysia’s high mobile and broadband penetration. It’s also boosted by the national push for better and wider telecommunications coverage, particularly in more remote areas.

 

4. User Experience (UX) Designer

Just like full stack engineers, the main employers of UX designers used to be tech companies. However, businesses in e-commerce, finance and manufacturing in Malaysia are increasingly looking to hire employees with technical and analytical skills and a customer-focus, according to LinkedIn.

Now that many businesses are moving their operations online, more companies hire UX designers to help make products such as apps and website easier for customers to use.

 

5. Content Writer

This job is currently in high demand in Malaysia, thanks to the popularity of social media use on smartphones, LinkedIn said. Companies are relying on compelling content to attract and retain customers online, now more than ever. This results in a spike in demand for content writers.

LinkedIn also said that many content writers come from journalism and publishing backgrounds, because these fields require social media skills and the ability to tell compelling stories that resonate with readers.
