It was a beautiful Friday, the probationary period was almost over and everything at job looked cool. However boss invited Brad to talk into his office and unexpectedly, for some particular reasons, he needed to leave the job.

There was no drama, no tears, only a shock and uncertainty. What’s next?

For the first week he sent at least fifty generic resumes which however haven’t received any results. It was almost a week since Brad was unemployed so the next weekend he started searching for some tips and after all the research, on the following Monday he sent his first targeted resumes.

Well, he found a new job… on the same day. From five resumes he sent out early on Monday morning, four lead to calls and one of the interviews he had later that day, brought him a new management job in a field he loves to work — street wear fashion.

It might sound like a short fairy tale with a happy ending, but it isn’t as mystical as it sounds. There was no luck and no success, only a measured strategy and a good plan.

Quality over Quantity

There is one single mistake that appears over and over again. For years, it looked as a trend but now it appears as the most harmful and the most disadvantageous problem. The same cause, why Brad got the job in one day and the same cause why the majority of people can’t find any job in months.

However, it’s not a lack of experience. The majority of people who have two or even five-year experience tend to search for a job in the same unprofessional way. It’s a simple, yet such a popular mistake.

People used to search for any kind of job, not the job.

At first glance, it might sound not like a mistake, but a logical reason. Entry-level candidates and recent graduates don’t have any official work experience, so they try to find whatever they can. However, an expectation to get any job by sending hundreds of emails to every open job position is only a hope.

You see, general resumes sent to irrelevant job positions look like a spam and spam is deleted; in most cases, even without a glimpse of a human eye, because of the modern Applicant Tracking Systems.

Quantity in job-hunting case loses over quality. Always. Because companies search for the candidate with the most relevant experience.

So… How to Get That Job?

Actually, very simple

The only thing you need is a bit of marketing and personal analysis. Follow the three-step tailoring plan.

STEP 1 — Identify yourself.

What do you like? What do you love? What is your career goal? Where do you see yourself in the near five-year future? These are some of the questions you need to ask yourself.

If you want to earn a lot of money, that is OK, but take a note that you can make a fortune much easier in a field that you are good at, doing things that you love. Don’t waste your life in a job that you hate for a wage that you could get in any other field and industry.

STEP 2 — Find THE Job and THE Company that matches you.

If you already identified yourself, it’s time to find the job. The job that some companies can offer and others don’t.

The best strategy to find the job is to select key companies in your favorite industry, which have the position for your beloved activity.

Brad, in this case, found several streetwear fashion brands and shops that offer digital marketing and e-commerce positions.

Make a list of five, ten or twenty companies. Do a market analysis of every company, find what they do, who the clients and competitors are and most of all — identify how you can help them. Find their problems.

It doesn’t matter companies offer a job or not at that moment, because employers, more than anyone else, know that people come and people go. There is a high chance there is a position waiting just for you.

STEP 3 — Target your resume.

To target the resume is not the fastest way and that is why the majority of people don’t do this strategy. However, it’s super effective, which can be proved by fifty real examples.

The logic of targeting is simple — you need to become as relevant a candidate to the position, as possible. To achieve this result, you need to follow some very important targeting rules:

First of all — scan job ad. Understand what a company is searching for, what tasks do candidates expect to deliver. Scan and pick up important keywords. Based on the research, rewrite your “generic draft/resume” to a one page tailored resume. You will start talking in the same language as the company.

The second thing and the single most annoying and unprofessional mistake that job candidates make is writing duties and tasks instead of accomplishments. The phrase “I was responsible for” doesn’t show results, it only states the fact that you have an experience.

The last thing what Brad did was enriching his sentences with action verbs and numbers that of all the elements, are the best way to show results.

If you spend some time to target your resume to a specific job position, it will become a gem. Not a broad and irrelevant document that is ignored and deleted.

STEP 4

Count this point as a personal advice next to the three step plan. After sending the tailored resume, contact the recruiter directly. On such websites as LinkedIn, you can find HR managers that hold interviews, even department managers and directors you would work for. Contact them and simply tell them that you are very interested in the company and you have already applied for the job position. Virtual contact is a good way to send your cover letter too.

If you contact the recruiter directly, it will show you are interested in the position more than others and that you are up for a chat with a company. What candidate can be better than the one who already talks with other teammates?

Conclusion

The labor market is competitive and every job seeker wants to get the best job. Some candidates want to earn more money only, without having an idea what the job position requires. Others, like you, want to follow the career path to become pros.

It’s hard to get a job and after some job-hunting time, you start to get any. Then you send hundreds of letters per day and start to live with a hope.

While one job opening brings an average 250 resumes, only four to six candidates receive a call. That’s why building a targeted resume is one of the best solutions if you want to stand out of the crowd as a candidate for that particular position.

Remember that relevant quality is always better than irrelevant quantity. Act smarter, not harder and you will get that wonderful job in the same day, as well as Brad did.
