By listing products on eBay’s global marketplace, Malaysian businesses will be able to reach 179 million buyers around the world. Wong Mein Inn, eBay Southeast Asia seller growth head, said Malaysia’s cross-border trade exports are still at an early phase and there is a big opportunity for more small businesses to join the rank of eBay sellers.

“We have launched the six-month ‘Let’s eBay Academy Programme’, which is designed to incubate the new sellers by sharing insights and hand-holding them, so they can successfully trade and sell to the global market,” she said in a statement.

A training workshop co-organised by eBay, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Let's eBay Academy Programme aims to help aspiring entrepreneurs begin their e-commerce business and connect with the global marketplace of active buyers.

Matrade CEO Datuk Wan Latiff Wan Musa said under the Digital Malaysia Initiative, e-commerce has been seen as one of the main enablers to stimulate revenue growth for the Malaysian economy.

“We would like to encourage more Malaysian small and medium enterprises, especially the younger generation, to explore international markets with one of the global pioneers in e-commerce, eBay,” he said.

Meanwhile, MDEC director of e-commerce, Song Hock Koon, said Malaysia, as a trading country, is now climbing the value chain and trading in ideas, innovation, as well as new technologies in a spirit of collaboration to develop the country’s future.

About Let's eBay

Let’s eBay Academy Programme is the first in a series initiated to train small businesses and entrepreneurs looking for new global sales channels in the rapidly growing eCommerce sector. A mixture of a strengthening local manufacturing sector and positive exchange rates has enabled substantial growth in eCommerce exports from Malaysia to the rest of the world.

Today, a growing number of Malaysian entrepreneurs are taking this chance by selling their products directly to consumers worldwide on eBay.

About 98.5% of business establishments are made up of small-medium enterprises (SMEs) and their contribution make up 17.3% of Malaysia’s exports. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the digital economy in 2017 contributed 18.2% to the country’s GDP, with the potential to increase to 20% by 2020.

During its launch in Kuala Lumpur, Let’s eBay featured partners like MATRADE, MDEC, PayPal and DHL sharing examples of global opportunities for Malaysians SMEs, practical guidance on getting started in the eCommerce industry, inspiring success stories as well as government infrastructure and initiatives which encourage entrepreneurs to build their business.

Let’s eBay will also travel to Penang and Johor in the coming months as part of continuing their support for entrepreneurs.
