Job candidates are eager to work for employers of choice. Even top talents of such employers prefer to stay loyal. With the low unemployment rate, it is now more important than ever to be an employer of choice. Nowadays, job applicants have more choices. All companies want their candidates and top talents to see them as the number one choice for employment.

Here are some ways on how your organisation can turn into an employer of choice:

Focus on Corporate Social Responsibility

As newer generations enter the workforce, it is even more important to become a socially responsible employer. They are passionate to work for companies that do some good in the world.

By being socially conscious, you are giving your employees a sense of positivity in their work. It makes them feel like they too are giving back to the community. Here are a few ways to become a socially responsible employer:

  • Organise a food drive
  • Participate in fundraising or awareness activities.
  • Create an interdepartmental team to plan and promote participation in charitable causes and events.
  • Declare volunteer days or offer employees a day "off" to volunteer in teams at a charity your organisation supports.

A great career path

Provide your employees a promising career path to encourage them to stay with your organisation:

  • Create opportunities for promotions.
  • Promote a visible career ladder. A clearly communicated career ladder will show your employees that there is a goal to work towards, giving them a sense of a future with your organisation.
  • Offer training and resources for them to learn and grow (read: Staff Training and Development - Is It Worth the Time and Costs). Stop your employees becoming bored in their roles, give them the opportunity to develop new skills. This will keep them engaged and happy.

Recognise and reward your employees

The organisation's goals need to motivate and engage the employees (read: What You Can Learn From 2018 Employee Engagement Statistics). Employees put in a lot of effort at work, and as an employer of choice you should reward that effort. Setting goals is also a great way to encourage employee engagement:

  • Set goals at the individual & department level. Develop a reward system to recognise the employees' achievements when they meet their goals.
  • Set goals at the organisational level. Reward all employees for reaching those goals. This will create a sense of teamwork and enthusiasm for achieving company-wide goals.

Compensate your employees well

Employees love to work for organisations that compensate them well. Ensure that your organisation is compensating the employees at or above market rates. Don't forget to include a comprehensive employee benefits package, such as bonuses (read: What You Need to Know About Employee Bonuses), health insurance, paid holidays, time-off, and vacation.

It's not easy to become an employer of choice and it doesn't happen overnight. Leaders of an organisation need to take a hard and honest look at its culture in order to become one. They will then need to decide which direction they want to take the organisation, and what they want it to become. It is a tough process, but if you put the right amount of time and effort, your organisation will become the employer of choice.
