In Malaysia, a company is rewarding its staff for taking the Covid-19 vaccine as soon as possible, and it has worked wonders for them. For their contribution, MY CO2 Group of Companies awarded RM150 to 120 employees after being vaccinated.

Its chief executive officer Louis Ooi stated that after introducing the incentives on Monday, registration for vaccination among staff increased from 58% to 85%.

According to him, about 30% of their employees are at high risk, particularly those working in customer service, industrial hygiene and environmental engineering departments. He said that these employees could not avoid on-site face-to-face meetings.

Ooi added that his firm provides lab-testing and accreditation to many manufacturers and is an essential service provider.

More cost-effective compared to tests

Ooi is also the chairman of the Malaysian Association Of Accredited Laboratories and Small and Medium Enterprises Association southern region chapter. He said that the financial incentive is more cost-effective compared to paying for Covid-19 screenings.

He stated that the RM150 incentive is cheaper than the cost of sending employees for regular PCR tests and risking closure due to close contact with confirmed cases.

Ooi said that his chief finance officer has already taken the vaccine while he and the chief development officer have received their appointment dates to get the AstraZeneca jab.

His company encourages employees to take the vaccine at the earliest possible date as the vaccine's side effects are proven to be minimal. He said that people need to understand that mass immunisation has been the key to reduce overall death tolls in the United States and the United Kingdom.

He hopes that other small and medium enterprises will also provide incentives to their employees to quickly get the vaccine too.

One of the vaccines provided by the Malaysian government is the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Other incentives for employees to get Covid-19 vaccine

In April, the recruitment and HR solutions company Randstad announced that it is giving paid COVID-19 vaccination leave to workers based in Singapore and Malaysia. This vaccination leave is an extension to the existing medical leave benefits.

The company has also reached out to local healthcare professionals to educate staff about the safety and efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines and debunk myths.

Managing Director - Malaysia and Singapore at Randstad, Jaya Dass, said that the aim to offer paid leave is to support employee health and eliminate barriers to vaccination. She noted that the Covid-19 vaccine rollout programme is a crucial step to market recovery.

She said through the initiative, the company hoped to supports its staff and remove any barriers they may face when taking the vaccine.

In Malaysia and Singapore, vaccination is voluntary. Both countries have already planned for the progressive immunisation of their populations, starting with high-risk groups. But, individual employers have the discretion to decide whether they should offer vaccination leave or not.
