Eight employees who were victims of their company's false claims for the wage subsidy program received their money of RM7,780 yesterday.

Johor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) director Azmi Alias said that they returned the money to the victims in a ceremony after receiving instructions from the court.

"The Johor MACC conducted a series of investigations into the Wage Subsidy Program (WSP) where the court found that the company submitted false claims to the government during the movement control order (MCO) 2020," he said.

On March 3, a company director was fined RM20,000 by the Johor Baru Sessions Court after pleading guilty to two charges of using false documents to claim government subsidies in April last year.

The accused also faces an additional six-month jail sentence for each charge if he fails to pay the fine.

The court ordered RM9,600 of RM17,380.50 seized by MACC to be forfeited and handed over to the government. The court also ordered the MACC to return the remaining RM7,780.50 to the eligible employees.

Azmi said the court ordered the Johor MACC to personally deliver the money claimed by the company but not delivered to those entitled.

"A total of eight employees who we have met at this ceremony expressed their gratitude for the unexpected aid and thanked the MACC for investigating this case transparently and fairly," he said.

"This case gives a clear picture that the MACC is not only prosecuting the givers and recipients of bribes but also defending the fate of employees who have been denied their rights by individuals or companies.

"I urge the public to lodge a complaint with the authorities if they are aware of any irregularities in any government allocation by certain parties," Azmi said.

The Case

The Sessions Court in Johor Baru fined a director of sawmill RM20,000 after he pleaded guilty to two charges of using false documents to apply for the WSP in 2020.

Eyo Ah Lai, 64, made the plea in front of judge Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail.

He was accused of using false documents with the name of four ineligible workers to claim for WSP, totalling RM4,800. The court accused him of committing the offence in April 2020 in Simpang Renggam.

The court also charged him with using false documents with the names of two ineligible workers to make WSP claims at RM4,800.

For both offences, the court charged Eyo under Section 471 of the Penal Code, which is punishable under Section 465. The judge sentenced him to an RM10,000 fine in place of a six-month jail term for each of the charges.
