Every manager has their own style of communication. Usually, their communication style works well in many situations and misses the mark in others. If a manager is not aware of their communication style's blind spots, it can cause trouble within the organisation.

Here's a guideline to identify your communication style and be aware of the warning signs when it is not working.

1. Doer

A manager who's a doer communicates efficiently, quickly and decisively. They love to get straight to the point. When they listen, they try to understand the essence of the message. A doer responds quickly and prefers to speed up conversations.

Warning signs: A doer may find that some of their communication is misunderstood or blurry because the receiver needs more information than they usually provide.

Be aware when employees ask many questions or if they misunderstand your directions. Your quick pace style might disrupt communication and create less interaction than you want, especially when your employees need more time to respond.

2. Intuitor

This manager is energetic, enthusiastic, and communicates with zeal. People are attracted to them because of the positive tone in their communication style. They are passionate about their opinions but also eager to listen to what others have to say. They always look for the positive aspect of the communication and work well with others' differing opinions.

Warning signs: Some people can't stand the manager's overwhelming energy. Others would back off when they think this manager's approach is too tense. If this is your style, be aware of others' non-verbal communication when they look a bit annoyed or unresponsive to your enthusiasm.

Thinking is good, but it's also crucial to act on it.

3. Thinker

This manager is analytical, cautious and communicates with precision. They like to include as many details as possible in their carefully thought-out message. When a thinker listens, they prefer to ask many questions until they understand the message's content 100%. A thinker responds slowly because they want to be careful with their choice of words.

Warning signs: If you are a thinker, you should be aware of the signs that you may be giving too many details than others want to hear. If they're fidgeting, losing attention, or interrupting you, they are encouraging you to hurry up. If you provide too much information, your audience will give you blank stares as they are unable to process what you said.

4. Feeler

This manager cares a lot about interpersonal relationships. They focus on the emotional tone of their communication and the responses they are creating. A feeler listens attentively and takes time to fully understand what was said. This manager works hard to include others' opinions in decision-making by collecting information from those involved.

Warning signs: Be aware that you are focusing too much on taking everyone's opinions into account that make it seem you forget the business aspect. Take note when you are receiving pushback about the facts and logic involved in the situation. Some might think your message is too soft and blame you for not wanting to communicate a stern message.

As leaders, we need to learn to read the warning signs related to our communication style. When we change our approach, we will create a better balance between ourselves and those we communicate with. Our communication style should work for us, not against us.
