Imagine that you just spent a lot of time and effort on a project. If you get to choose, would you prefer a generic "Well done!" praise or more insightful feedback?

Both comments can improve employee motivation, performance, and engagement, but many would prefer the second option. Why is that?

The reason is employee recognition. It's hard for companies to recognise their employees properly. Employee recognition can enhance retention, which improves cost savings, productivity and customer experiences.

When your employee feels recognised, they also feel appreciated. When they feel valued, they will end up feeling happy. According to this survey, 82% of employees believe that recognition is a crucial part of their happiness at work.

Based on a report, 90% of employees think that recognition motivates them to work harder. This report says that recognition is tied directly to performance.

Employee Recognition vs Praise

Though both recognition and praise can positively affect workers' attitudes, recognition has a more powerful and longer-lasting impact.

The primary difference between praise and recognition is that the latter is specific. Praise, on the other hand, is rather generic. Recognition involves the act of providing feedback based on the employee's results and performance.

Real recognition is based on insights and detailed observations.

Why is recognition precious to employees? Because employees appreciate receiving helpful feedback after working hard. They need recognition to understand the purpose of their job.

Recognition helps employees to see how their work contributes to the overall success of the organisation. It also helps employees feel more fulfilled at work, and they are more likely to stay with the company.

Praise is made up of generic comments, improving self-esteem and making workers feel motivated at a particular moment. Effective praise can help workers meet tight deadlines or achieve ambitious goals.

However, it can quickly turn into a demotivator if employees feel the praise is insincere somehow. That's why one should use praise sparingly and opt for recognition whenever possible.

How to recognise employees

Recognition needs more effort than giving praise. Here are some tips to help you recognise your employees:

1. Schedule a one-on-one meeting

This meeting is a chance to listen to your employees. Ask them how they would like to receive recognition, and focus on what they want.

  • Do they want to be recognised in a group meeting?
  • Would they prefer to receive detailed feedback in private?

Delivering recognition in the right way is almost as crucial as the content of the recognition itself.

2. Use the internal communications channels

Every company has its internal channels to communicate with each other, such as company WhatsApp or DingTalk. You can use the internal channels to shower your employees with recognition.

Focus on how the switch to remote work has affected your employees. Most people communicate via chat messages and emails nowadays, so calling an employee on the phone to personally thank them could be sufficient to make them feel motivated and appreciated.

3. Feedback also works

The simple act of giving out detailed comments about a worker's performance is a form of recognition in itself. Employees value managers and leaders who take time to closely evaluate their work and offer constructive feedback.

The fact that a manager is willing to pay close attention to the employees' work shows that the manager values their efforts. Most workers appreciate managers who challenge them to see things differently.

4. Support the employee's professional development

Supporting workers to achieve their professional goals is one of the best ways to recognise employees. It doesn't necessarily mean that you should pay for their training courses, although it would be beneficial.

Supporting an employee's growth can be as easy as sharing resources with them and offering guidance from your point of view.

If your company has not jumped on the recognition bandwagon yet, now is the best time.

Keep in mind that both recognition and praise are essential in keeping employee morale high. However, recognition is especially critical in terms of driving talent retention.

Everyone likes to be praised for a job well done, but insightful, detailed feedback will always trump over praise when it comes to convincing employees to stay for a long time.
